Practical Task 19/11/24
Year 2 Maths Task: Shape Hunt and Creation
Objective: Explore 2D and 3D shapes in your home environment and learn about their properties.
Part 1: Shape Hunt
1. Look around your home and find:
- 5 different 2D shapes (e.g. square, rectangle, circle, triangle, etc.).
- 5 different 3D shapes (e.g. cube, cylinder, sphere, cone, etc.).
2. Write down or draw each shape you find. Next to each shape, write:
- 2D shapes: How many sides and corners does it have?
Example: A square has 4 sides and 4 corners.
- 3D shapes: How many faces, edges, and corners does it have?
Example: A cube has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 corners.
---
Part 2: Shape Creation
Using everyday items like paper, cardboard, tape, scissors (with adult supervision) or building blocks, create:
1. One 2D shape
- Cut out a large triangle, rectangle or any other 2D shape from a piece of paper.
- Measure its sides with a ruler. Write down how long each side is.
2. One 3D shape:
- Use a small box, tin can or other objects to represent a 3D shape.
- Describe your 3D shape. Is it a cube, cylinder or something else? How many faces, edges and corners does it have?
Challenge: Build a Shape Picture or Structure
- Use the 2D and 3D shapes you found or made to:
- Create a picture using only 2D shapes (e.g. a house made of rectangles and triangles).
- Build a structure using 3D shapes (e.g. a tower using boxes and cans).
Take a photo or draw what you created!
Extension Questions
- Which shape do you see the most in your house? Why do you think that is?
- What shape do you think is the strongest for building? Try stacking different shapes to find out.
