Our Science topic for this half term is: Plants!
In this unit we will be closely studying plants and trees in the natural environment, taking measurements and making observational drawings. We will be planting a seed and a bulb and comparing them as they grow. We will record changes in our plants, taking measurements throughout the unit and finally drawing bar charts to show the growth of the two plants. We will set up a comparative experiment to observe what plants need to grow well, and watch the germination process first hand by growing cress. We will learn about plants we eat, and understand that farming involves creating the right conditions for food crops to grow.
I have attached below a 'Plants Word Mat' which contains the key scientific vocabulary that we will be using in this unit. You may want to print his out so that you can refer to it when needed.
This week's lesson is called Observing Plants. You will be looking closely at plants and trees and recording what you see by writing, drawing and measuring. You will label the main parts of plants and trees.
First of all spend some time going through the PowerPoint below.
On slide 7 you will need to use the Parts of a Flowering Plant PDF below. Cut out the parts of the plant and stick them into your Distance Learning book in the correct order, labelling the parts correctly. (Alternatively you could draw and label the parts.)
On slide 9 you will need to use the Parts of a Tree PDF below. Cut out the parts of the tree and stick them into your Distance Learning book in the correct order, labelling the parts correctly. (Alternatively you could draw and label the parts.)
On slide 11, it asks you to go into your garden or on a walk to see what plants and trees you can find. You can then choose whether to complete one of the Tree Observation sheets or the Flowering Plants Observation sheet. Or as an extra challenge you may want to complete both!
If you would like to add photos or little cuttings to your work, feel free!
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU HAVE A WEEK TO COMPLETE THIS TASK.
IT IS DUE IN ON MONDAY 8TH JUNE.
