Summer Term 1
This term We are Creators!
Our big question this half term is 'What can we make?'
Within this topic we will be:
- Exploring and using a range of materials and techniques to create self-portraits
- Creating our own imaginative artwork inspired by nature, including butterflies and seasonal changes
- Observing the signs of Summer and exploring the natural world around us
- Learning about life cycles, including butterflies, ducks, and plants, and how living things grow and change
Phonics and Reading Groups
We will be revising and practising all Phase 2 and Phase 3 sounds and tricky words to build fluency and confidence. We will also begin learning Phase 4 tricky words.

Children read in a Reading Group three times a week at school. During the Reading Group session we focus on:
Decoding - segmenting the sounds to read the words
Prosody - reading with expression
Comprehension - asking questions about the book
The reading book is then sent home on a Friday. Children can celebrate their hard work that they have done at school and show you their wonderful reading!
Maths
In Maths we will be:
- Subitising to 5 and recognising patterns
- Comparing, sorting, and ordering numbers and quantities
- Exploring doubles and beginning to understand number relationships
- Developing confidence in counting forwards and backwards
- Exploring shape, space and measure, including length, capacity, and size
English
In English lessons, we teach a story using 'Talk 4 Writing'. Talk 4 Writing enables children to be immersed in a story by learning through drama and role play. We will learn the story, focus on key features and pick apart the vocabulary. The children will then learn the skills to create and innovate their own story, following the structure/ sequence of the story we are learning. In Summer Term 1, our focus story is 'Farmer Duck'.
Forest School
At Forest School, children will explore the signs of Summer in the natural environment. They will observe plants, minibeasts, and wildlife, including bird watching, and notice how the environment changes during the warmer months.
We can't wait to share what we get up to. Please look out for updates and observations on Tapestry!
