Spring Term 1

This term We are Thinkers!

Our big question this half term is 'How do things change?'

Within this topic we will be:

Observing the changes in the weather and finding out all about Winter

Looking at old maps of Great Missenden and walking around the community to see how things have changed

Comparing and sorting objects from the past and what they look like now.

Looking at baby photos to see how we have changed!

Phonics and Reading Groups

We will begin to learn Phase 3 phonics! Children will learn more digraphs, trigraphs and tricky words! We will also begin to read longer words.

For more information please visit the Little Wandle website:

https://www.littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk/resources/for-parents/

Children read in a Reading Group three times a week at school. During the Reading Group session we focus on:

Decoding - segmenting the sounds to read the words

Prosody - reading with expression

Comprehension - asking questions about the book

The reading book is then sent home on a Friday. Children can celebrate their hard work that they have done at school and show you their wonderful reading!

Maths

In Maths we will be:

Subitising to 5

- Comparing and ordering numbers and quantities

Using number tracks and part/whole models

Learning numbers 6 and 7

Exploring length and time and comparing them in different ways, extending our mathematical vocabulary

English

In English lessons, we teach a story using 'Talk 4 Writing'. Talk 4 Writing enables children to be immersed in a story by learning through drama and role play. We will learn the story, focus on key features and pick apart the vocabulary. The children will then learn the skills to create and innovate their own story, following the structure/ sequence of the story we are learning. In Spring Term 1, our focus story is 'The Three Little Pigs'.

Forest School

At Forest School, the children will explore the signs of winter in the natural environment. They will observe winter trees, look for animals that live outdoors during winter, and enjoy bird watching, noticing the different birds and how they survive in the colder months.

We can't wait to share what we get up to. Please look out for updates and observations on Tapestry!
