Sports Funding at Great Missenden C of E School

What is the Sports Premium?

The Sports Premium is a fund given to primary schools from the Government to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all children. It is jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture and Media and Sport.  Here at Great Missenden CoE Combined School we have been given a total budget of £19,750 to use for sport. Please look at the attached Sports Premium Funding document for our most up to date figures.

The four objectives of the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding are:

• To improve the quality of existing PE teaching through continuing professional learning in PE for generalists, so that all primary pupils improve their health, skills and physical literacy, and have broader exposure to a range of sports
• To increase participation levels in competitive sport and healthy activity of pupils, and maintain these into adolescence
• To increase the quality of initial teacher training in PE and sport, and to promote PE specialisation in primary level workforce
• Schools understand and value the benefits of high quality PE and sport, including its use as a tool for whole school improvement

The 5 Key Indicators:

1. The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity.

2. The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement.

3. Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching Physical Education and sport.

4. Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils.

5. Increased participation in competitive sport.

Purpose of the funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport.  Since the sports funding has been granted, Great Missenden School has spent the money in various ways to improve the quality and choice of sport within school:

  • Hiring a specialist PE teacher to work with class teachers when teaching PE
  • Creating a Sports Partnerships within the GLT, including local feeder schools, allowing more children from all year groups to represent the school in competitive sport
  • Covering administrative fees when joining sports leagues and memberships.
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Investing in high quality PE equipment
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport (Complete PE)
  • Booking sport activities/workshops

Possible uses for the funding might include:

  • Supporting and engaging the least active children through new or additional Change4Life clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities for teachers in PE and sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE and sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after-school sports clubs
  • Enabling staff to upskill themselves by attending various courses, relevant to the sports curriculum

We believe that the school is making good use of the grant and the children of Great Missenden have many opportunities to experience new sports and quality sports coaching. We offer a range of sports clubs and the children have more chances to represent their school in competitive matches against other schools.

At Great Missenden CoE Combined School, we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children. See attached documents below for further information on PE in the school.

Opportunities for children

Throughout the year we provide stimulating and exciting PE lessons in a variety of sports, children also develop their fundamental movement skills using the Complete PE planning scheme of work.

This year children are planned to participate in many sporting events either in leagues, cup competitions and sports festivals organised within the GLT Sports Partnership, recently established by Great Missenden School's PE Coordinator.  Additionally, our school has successful boys and girl’s football teams who participate in a local league and cup competitions.

At Great Missenden CoE Combined School we provide many opportunities for children to be physically active through the many extracurricular clubs we provide. Additionally we promote an active healthy life style to children.
