Maths Task - 5.11.24

Tens Treasure Hunt

Objective: Practice adding and subtracting 10 from different numbers using everyday items at home.

Materials Needed:

  • 20-30 small items (such as pasta pieces, blocks, coins, or buttons)
  • Paper and pencil

Instructions:

  1. Set Up a Starting Number: Begin by choosing a number between 0 and 20. For example, start with 7. Place 7 items on a table or a flat surface.

  2. Adding 10 More: Ask your child to add 10 more items to the starting number (e.g., 7 items + 10 items). Encourage them to count as they add to find the new total. They can write it down on their paper:

    • Example: 7 + 10 = 17
  3. Taking Away 10: Now, ask them to take away 10 items from the total. Count as they take the items away, finding the new total. Write this down too:

    • Example: 17 - 10 = 7
  4. Repeat with New Starting Numbers: Try new starting numbers, like 5, 12, or 15. Each time, they should:

    • Add 10 more items to the starting number and write down the total.
    • Take 10 items away and write down the new total.
