Practical Task 3/12/24
3D Shape Detective Task
Objective: Explore 3D shapes at home, sort them into groups, and count their faces, vertices, and edges.
Instructions:
Find 3D Shapes at Home
Look around your house and collect items with different 3D shapes. For example:- A cereal box (cuboid)
- A ball (sphere)
- A can (cylinder)
- A dice or cube toy (cube)
- A party hat (cone)
Tip: Try to find at least 4 different shapes!
Shape Sorting
- Sort the items into groups based on their shape.
- You can use this guide to help:
- Cuboid: A box shape with flat faces.
- Sphere: A round ball with no edges.
- Cylinder: A shape with two flat circles and one curved surface.
- Cone: A shape with one flat circle and one pointy end.
- Cube: A box where all the faces are squares.
Counting Challenge
For each item you found, count the:- Faces: Flat or curved surfaces.
- Edges: Where two faces meet.
- Vertices (corners): Where edges meet.
Example Table:
Item Shape Faces Edges Vertices Cereal Box Cuboid 6 12 8 Orange Ball Sphere 1 0 0 Baked beans can Cylinder 3 2 0 Draw Your Shapes
Draw one of the 3D shapes you found and label its faces, edges, and vertices.Write a Short Report
- What shapes did you find most often in your house?
- Which shape was the hardest to find?
- Did any items not fit any of the shapes?
Bonus Challenge:
If you have playdough, try to make your own 3D shapes and count their faces, edges, and vertices.
Have fun being a 3D Shape Detective!
