Practical Task - 26/11/24

Objective:
Learn about symmetry by identifying, creating, and exploring symmetrical shapes and patterns.

Go on a symmetry hunt around your home!

  1. Find 5 symmetrical objects (e.g., a clock, a flower, a mirror).
  2. Draw or take pictures of these objects.
  3. For each object, fold a piece of paper in half and try to draw the object with the line of symmetry in the middle.

  1. Butterfly Symmetry Art:

    • Take a piece of paper and fold it in half.
    • Open it up, and on one side, draw half a butterfly or use paint to create a design.
    • Fold the paper again to press your drawing or paint onto the other side.
    • Open it up—what do you see?
    • Decorate your butterfly to make it colourful and beautiful.
  2. Shape Challenge:

    • Draw a line down the middle of a piece of paper.
    • On one side, draw half of a heart, star, or face.
    • Ask a grown-up to help you complete the other side so it’s symmetrical!

Extension Activity

If you’re ready for more, try making symmetrical patterns using items like Lego bricks, building blocks, or coins! Arrange them on one side of a line and then copy the pattern on the other side.
